Why is my business not showing up on Google for my work?
![A phone searching [your trade] near me: three competitors listed and your business not in the top three](/_next/image?url=%2Fblog%2Fonly-show-up-on-google-when-people-search-my-name%2Fhero.jpg&w=3840&q=75&dpl=dpl_HmVSAAX1dZUPrGuFUEnHk1jW44v6)
Why is my business not showing up on Google, except when people search my name? Google knows your name but not your work. New customers type what they need and where, like "deck builder langley". If your site and profile don't spell out each service and town, Google has nothing to match.
Your name search shows referrals, not new customers
Type your business name into Google and you come up first. But think about who types your name. Someone who got your card, heard about you from a neighbour, or saw your truck.
They'd already found you. Google just gave them your number. Your name search shows your referrals. A search for your service and town shows whether new customers can find you. That's the one to check.
Search each service and town the way a customer does
On your phone, in a private tab, with location on, type what you do and your town. Try "concrete driveway maple ridge", not your name. Then try each service you sell, then the next town over.
Write down where you appear for each one: on the map, on the first page below it, or nowhere. That list is the honest picture. It's usually different from what owners expect.
Why your business is not showing up on Google for services
Usually every service sits on one page, the towns aren't named, and page titles say only the business name. Google's starter guide asks for titles that are "unique to the page, clear and concise". Put the service and the area in them.
A made-up landscaper in Maple Ridge might be first for its name and nowhere for "yard cleanup". The words "yard cleanup" appear nowhere on its site. Google can't rank you for work you never mention. The next post explains how local search works.

- Have you searched each service you sell, plus your town, without your name?
- Does each main service have its own page, with the service and area in the title?
